How To Get Mermaid Hair At Home

Mermaid hair has been trending since last year. The best part being, there is something for everyone. From the vivid hues to the flawless blending, all mermaid styles are unique, and each one is a piece of art. Why yes, I do love some color in my hair. I prefer to go with the subtle look. Which means adding some fun colored streaks in your hair. Some have the guts to fully commit so that is just up to you.

It's not just laying down and slapping color on the hair, but there's a lot of intention behind each brush stroke.

Dyeing hair in pastel colors is fun. However, to get this mermaid hair color the strands need to be bleached. Make sure the stylist will take all precautions and minimize the damage for your strands. Also, remember about home treatment and learn how to replicate them yourself!.

How To Pre-Lighten Your Hair

If you're planning on going pastel or any color lighter than your current color, pre-lightening your hair a stunning finishing result. Why? Lightening your hair opens up the cuticle of the hair and remove some of the pigment, making it more receptive to color. It's particularly important to pre-lighten your hair whenever you're going for a vibrant color, a pastel, or a finishing look that is significantly lighter than your current look (i.e. going from brown to blonde).

4 Simple Steps

  1. Ensure that your hair has not been washed in 2-3 days. The oils in your hair will help with the lightening process.
  2. Brush out your hair to get rid of any tangles or knots. Wear your gloves and apply the petroleum jelly along your hairline on your forehead, neck, and ears.
  3. Following the instructions on the kit, mix your bleach.Section away the crown part of your hair and as per the instructions on the kit, apply the bleach onto the loose hair with the applicator brush. Once you’re done with the bottom sections, undo the sectioned away the top part of your hair and repeat the application process.
  4. Leave the bleach on for the recommended duration of time and then proceed to shampoo and condition your hair.

  1. Once you’ve pre-lightened your hair, pick some mermaid colors of your choice. Ensure that your hair has been freshly washed and conditioned.
  2. Brush out your hair to get rid of any tangles or knots.Wear your gloves and apply the petroleum jelly along your hairline on your forehead, neck, and ears.
  3. Pour the hair dye into bowls. Have a separate bowl for each color if you are using more than one.
  4. For an ombre effect, take two bowls; one containing hair dye, and another containing hair dye that has been diluted with conditioner. (Arctic fox, manic panic, pravana, pulp riot, and crazy color are some good brands to work with.)
  5. Start applying the dye onto your lightened hair in sections. You can paint random strands with different colors, or you can use one or multiple colors to create an ombre effect.
  6. Once you’ve applied the dye, wait for 30 minutes. Wash your hair with a color protecting shampoo and conditioner.
